Multi Family Homes

A multi-family home is one in which there are several dwellings housed in a single building, and one of the many types of prefab homes or buildings. One of the most well-known examples of a multi-family resident is an apartment building. Most everyone is familiar with apartment buildings. They are a popular form of housing. Condos, town houses duplexes, three-plexes and four-plexes are other examples.

There are a number of advantages associated with multi-family residential living. There are also disadvantages. We’ll discuss the advantages first.

One of the best things about living in a multi-family unit, with the exception of condos, is that anytime something goes wrong, for instance, an appliance needs to be repaired it is the responsibility of the dwelling owner and not the person living in the home, to repair it. The reason that condos are excluded is that they are owned and not rented. When a person owns a home, they are responsible for all of the repairs and maintenance. An individual that isn’t ready for this responsibility to forgo owning a home until they are ready for it.

Another great thing about living in a multi-family dwelling is that it is generally smaller, which means less upkeep. Now, this can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. A small apartment will be ideal for some people. It won’t be for others.

Amenities are another advantage of multi-dwelling living. For instance, some apartment buildings will have tennis courts, swimming pools and work-out facilities onsite that residents have access to. These same amenities may not be available at a person’s single dwelling home.

Just as there are advantages associated with living in a multi-family unit there are also disadvantages. As mentioned above, a small dwelling can be both an advantage and disadvantage. It depends on the person. People that desire a bigger space may not be pleased, living in what they consider to be cramped living quarters.

Having to share a space with another family is another knock against living in a multi-family unit. There is less privacy then there is when a person resides in a single-family dwelling.

When shopping for a home, a person or family will need to make a decision about whether or not they will live in a single or multi-family home. For some people this will be easy. They may not have much of a choice when it comes to living in a multi-family dwelling. It may be all that they can afford. For those that do have an option, there are advantages and disadvantages associated with each. It will important that an individual consider both before deciding.
