Things usually get pretty overwhelming for people who are buying their first home. The process can be quite daunting but with some general knowledge and tips you can easily get your first home without making any mistakes.

Prior to doing anything else, have a look at your finances. This will tell you what you can afford. Remember that if you can afford the rent payment currently, does not mean that in the future you can also afford the same mortgage payment as well. Other charges can add up to this amount like private mortgage insurance and property taxes.

Before you start searching for your new home; there are some questions that you should answer yourself.

Firstly, see if you prefer any neighborhoods above the others. Why do you do so? If you are not sure then start researching about the neighborhood in which you are currently residing and see if you will like to move into something similar or different. Many neighborhoods are run by their neighborhood associations so you can simply get on their website and get information.

See if there is anything you will not comprise on. Well, many people simply will not compromise on the number of bathrooms, bedrooms, size of the front and back yard, garage size, and other such factors. Are you interested in moving into a specific school district? If yes then which one? Do you want any particular places to be nearby your new home like some eating areas, library, sports complex, park, etc? do you want a traditionally built home, or a prefabricated home?

If you are moving in to your new home with your partner then answer these questions sitting together. You should also take help and advice from a realtor — who is this? A realtor is a real estate agent who knows a lot more about buying and selling homes than we do. You can tell this person what you are looking for and this is going to be your first home; a realtor makes sure that you get what you are looking for in the budget you have. However, this person will have a commission percentage that you will pay them once the job is done.

Also, you can see if the appliances are included already in the home, go over property taxes in that area, and see if any recent upgrades were made to the house. Lastly, be sure that the house structure is strong and neat and does not require any sort of repairing — a home inspector is an integral part of this process.
